Blondie’s Call Me, the Lipps Inc Funkytown and Paul McCartney’s Coming Up were hot on the Billboard charts. The Empire Strikes Back was striking it big in theatres. The New York Islanders had clenched the Stanley Cup. And Dr. Hugh Munro first stepped onto Wilfrid Laurier University’s Waterloo campus to begin his tenure in the then new School of Business & Economics. A lot has changed in the thirty-odd years since 1980, but Dr. Munro has remained a welcomed constant.
On May 18, more than 100 Lazaridis MBA alumni from our Toronto programs came to Torys LLP to celebrate Hugh’s contributions to the Lazaridis MBA and his impact on their lives. There were stories – lots of stories. With laughter and tears, we heard about the impact Hugh left on the lives of those he taught, while Hugh in turn shared how his students had impacted him.
In 2013, Lazaridis MBA Toronto Alumni endowed a scholarship, Hugh Munro MBA Award of Excellence, to recognize an outstanding Lazaridis MBA Toronto student exhibiting the values of inspiring lives of leadership and purpose through demonstrated leadership and community involvement. “The award reflects the leadership and values of Hugh,” said Mitch Frazer MBA ’03 and host of Thursday’s celebration. “He was a mentor to many of us and, really, your ideal professor.”
